I am a bit late getting this put on as you might expect with a newborn, however still felt the need to share my experience at the hospital during my labour. In May I had felt contractions all day and after checking with triage team decided to go in to get checked over. When I got there I was having contractions even on the way up to the ward so they took me aside into another room and gave me some pain relief as my waters had broken as I'd got out the car. The midwife and student which helped me for the first couple of hours were fantastic, unfortunately I didn't get their names, although it was then time for a shift change and that's when I had Val as midwife and Lauretta a student looking after me through the night. They were absolutely fantastic and really put me at ease throughout the 12 hours, even with the concern of my high blood pressure and baby's showing a little concern when she wasn't quite at the right angle and showing a little distress when I moved sides.
I was then taken to top up my epidural and undergo an emergency c section which again I wasn't expecting but the full team put me at ease ( I don't remember too much about details as the drugs knocked me sideways) but every person that came to help was fantastic. Afterwards I was taken to my recovery room while baby got taken to be checked over as was breathing a bit erratically, which although it was a worrying time I knew the team were looking after her and doing the best things for her.
I was then left with my husband and eventually baby in my room, having my blood pressure checked regularly although with the epidural wearing off I was in increasing pain and wasn't given much in way of pain relief other than paracetamol and ibuprofen until it was unbearable and I had to ask for more as couldn't leave my bed with the pain. I did have a number of people come in to help me with baby etc but by far the midwife which helped me the most and really seemed to take more time out to help me and make sure I wasn't in as much pain and even help with breastfeeding was Fiona who I genuinely feel is such a massive asset to your fantastic team and want to ensure that the people I've mentioned in particular get the recognition they deserve!
"Massive asset to a fantastic team"
