"Always treated with decency and respect"

About: Castle Hill Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as the patient),

I was taken into Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham near Hull in October 2009 with breathing problems. I have been to the hospital several times with the same problem. I have breathing difficulties due to having emphysema.

I can honestly say I have always been treated with decency and respect during my visits. The worst bits about going are the arterial blood tests they do to test for blood gasses. They can be really painful if the right person doesn't do them. What I can't understand is why they don't do them like the nurse does them, who comes to my home to take them. She takes a blood sample from my ear for my blood gasses - a lot less painful.

What should change is mixed wards. I understand sometimes due to lack of space it's not always easy to have single sex wards, but I much prefer them, as do other people I speak to when I've been in hospital.
