"Quality of care for my elderly mother"

About: St Peter's Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

My 92 year old mother was admitted to have operation on her broken hip.

She is a dementia sufferer and is not competent to take care of herself.

Her operation was successful and her medical treatment was high quality.

During her recuperation she lost one of her hearing aids on which she depends. Nobody noticed this, nobody registered or recorded this or passed the information on from one day's team to the other. This hearing aid simply need not have been lost - a moment spent checking when changing her bedding is all it would have taken.

She was without her hearing aid for several weeks whilst a replacement was made.

Also during her recuperation my mother developed mouth ulcers. To facilitate healing her lower dentures were removed and safely put in a box by her bedside. This box remained by her bedside for the remainder of her stay.

On her discharge, the box, and her denture disappeared.

One doctor told me what drug they had decided to administer to counteract my mother's postural hypotension as it was preventing her receiving physiotherapy.

On her discharge there was no record of this drug, or physiotherapy

My mother's discharge sheet stated that my mother was walking.

She was not.

Changed medication stated on her discharge sheet correctly mentioned the antibiotic she was prescribed. However my mother's antidepressants were reduced by the hospital with no reason given, or stated in any way.

We are sorry to read about your mother’s experiences and that she lost both her hearing aid and dentures whilst under our care. Whilst we try our best to help our patients keep track of their belongings things do go missing occasionally and we appreciate it must have been particularly distressing for your mother to be without these items for a prolonged period of time. It is difficult for us to comment specifically on the issues you raise around your mother’s medication. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss all of your concerns in more detail and if you would be willing to do so then please call our Patient Advice and Liaison Team on 01932 723553 to arrange a meeting.
