I visited my niece yesterday who is a patient on the short stay medical ward. She is a young woman who has a relapse of a long standing condition.. She is in effect bed bound. I was impressed that already she is nursed on a pressure relieving mattress. She has signs at the bottom of her bed to point out that she needs assistance and has visual impairment . Yesterday I saw she had been provided with drinking beakers and now she can drink without drenching herself. No matter how often she calls for assistance the staff arrive and are friendly an attentive. The staff maintain her dignity. When I asked the staff a few questions about her care and condition they answered without making me feel a nuisance even though they were clearly very very busy. I was left feeling reassured and less worried. The ward is clean and attention is given priority to the prevention of the spread of infection. I would say that the most important message make is a comment is what my niece said to me. (Bare in mind she is vulnerable and totally dependent on others at the moment a scary situation for anyone). She told me she feels safe, that the staff really care and that they listen to her. What a commendation!!. Its a good feeling to walk away in the knowledge that she is safe and cared about. ( As a retired nurse Im not the easiest of visitors to impress !!). Please pass on these comments to the staff and thank them for their high quality care even though they are clearly very busy . Even though this government do not seem to value you--your patients and their families and friends do.
