"Communication problems"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Radiology (X-rays and Scans) Gilbert Bain Hospital / Maternity

(as a relative),

My daughter who was at the time 7 weeks pregnant was examined at GBH Lerwick and was ultimately sent via air ambulance to ARI for an MRI scan. I asked at this point whether there was a risk to the foetus and was assured there was none. However, on arrival at the ARI the consultant advised against this as there is significant risk to the baby! !

The discharge notes from ARI stated that she had been admitted due to constipation? ? ?

This was NOT the case as the only reason constipation occurred was because of the pain medication she was put on. My daughter was aware of this and had been asking for a laxative for 3 days – she was ultimately given an enema which solved the constipation. the problem was that she had severe back pain

The main issue here appears to be lack of communication.

Dear saturnnp39,

Thanks for getting touch.

I’m really sorry that you and your daughter had such a poor experience. Being taken by air ambulance from Lerwick must have been worrying for you both – even more so with a baby on the way.

I’m disappointed to hear that you didn’t feel listened to or well communicated with – you should both have felt well informed and have received clear and consistent information from staff throughout the journey and it doesn’t sound like this happened.

Your comments will be shared with the service involved and we appreciate you taking the time to let us know how you felt as it helps us see how we can improve.

I hope that your daughter’s back pain has gone and that the rest of her pregnancy goes well.

Take care,

Kirsten

Thank you for getting in touch to tell us about your daughter's experience. I am sorry that this has caused concern for you.

We would welcome you and your daughter getting in touch with us directly so we can get a few details that would enable us to look into this further and also provide you both with some reassurance about the proposed diagnostic test.

If you would like to do so, please email our Child and Family Health Manager Mrs Kate Kenmure at kate.kenmure@nhs.net.

Thank you
