We arrived at the minor injuries unit today at around 11:45. We were seen within around 5 mins by the triage nurse and then told to go back to the waiting room and there would be about an hour to wait.
My daughter had a sore eye as she had got something in it, and she had previously had a corneal abrasion and said this felt the same.
After around an hour my daughter was now in a lot more pain than when we arrived and was unable to blink as it was so painful and was holding her eye shut and was crying.
I thought I'd let the receptionist know, as it was worse than when she'd seen the triage nurse and just wanted to let them know things had changed.
Within a few minutes the main nurse in the unit came flying round the corner and started shouting at me. The nurse said that they were doing the best they could and that I would be better going to a pharmacy to buy some eye drops as it was obviously just an allergy. Then the nurse shouted at my daughter to" get you fingers away from you eye". I said that she was holding it closed as blinking was so painful. The nurse then abruptly said that they would get her a piece of gauze to hold it with.
I had not raised my voice at any time and had been polite and courteous and was in no way trying to say we were rushing anybody so to be spoken to like that in front of the whole waiting area was wholly unprofessional. I understand that nhs staff should be spoken to in an appropriate manner but so should the patients.
The lady sat opposite me was shocked at how we were spoken to and so was I.
It was totally uncalled for. We were seen at around 2 pm by that same nurse, who had their name badge tucked away in their top pocket. The nurse was still frosty but not rude.
I have now called the unit to enquire their name.
"The most rude nhs staff member I've ever met"
