"An eye opening experience"

About: Eastbourne District General Hospital / General medicine

You hear politicians praise Drs & nurses so often that the impact tends to loose its punch i.e. the "points scoring" obligatory thing to say because another party has already.

I spent only two nights in Medical Assessment Seafood 1 E Bay, I can not over emphasise the level of care that I witnessed.

In E bay of the 5 of us there were three really poorly cases, one of which was a "Night Crawler". Night 1, he just wouldn't stay in his bed. At a guess he crept off about 15 times. It was inevitable that he would come a cropper and sure enough he did. Climbing out of bed with his long legs over the bars, he hit the floor. Eventually with the determination, a nurse sat next to his bed to prevent his escape. After an hour plus of attempting to contain the situation, our Night Crawler's temperament of unreasonable turned to rage. With a number of nurses helping and his arms & legs flying about, there was a cry of pain from the nurse, who left the scene. It was necessary eventually to call security. A sedative was administered and the rest of us at 2am could get some sleep.

I was no looking forward to Night 2, opposite the Night Crawler. As it turned out the monster in the Night Crawler had calmed. I was pretty knocked out but each time I woke I heard the droning dialogue of him opposite. He wasn't a agitated and there were no attempt to leave his bed. "Three months" he keep saying. "Three months. Dead". I then heard the voice of a kindly nurse who expressed to him they lost their father in the same way. It was incredibly moving.

I should like to thank all the staff for their kindness during my brief stay. Although all the care was outstanding, I would commend in particular the first nurse, another member of staff and the last nurse. You have a very difficult job and so much patience. I wish you were on "Bankers Saleries" or even close. Well done.
