"I don't think the doctor knew why I was there"

About: County Hospital Louth / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

Firstly I had to wait 40 mins to be seen, even though I asked on my arrival if the clinic was running to time and was told there were not any delays. When I walked into the consultation room the consultant introduced themselves, I missed their name and asked them to repeat it, I still did not catch it. They looked at my file and said that the scan report I previously had was not included, they seemed annoyed at that and was moaning about it, they then got an e-mail and read it and laughed ignoring that myself and the student were in the room.

They sent the student nurse out to get it a copy of the report. They asked me where I had the scan and I said which hospital (different to where this appointment was. ) They looked in notes and gave me impression they did not understand reason for referral, I tried to explain situation and my concerns. They said the symptoms I was talking about were incidental and not related and that I was getting anxious about something that was not there.

The student nurse returned with report and they read it, they told me that I had the scan in the same hospital and I told them I had not but they insisted that I had. They then asked me (in an abrupt manner) what I wanted them to do. I explained that the GP had sent me as they were not sure what action to take and I am happy to follow their advice, and I told them they had covered my questions.

I came out feeling upset, I felt like they had no idea why I was there, they rudely read an e-mail during my consultation and became argumentative about where I had my scan. The conversation with them I felt was confusing, they seemed to not consider my concerns as being significant. I did come away knowing what was wrong and what needed to happen next, but it was the way the consultation was led and how it made me feel afterwards that I don't think patients should have to go through.
