"Maternity unfit"

About: Honiton Community Hospital

I gave birth to my first baby in April 2017 in Exeter hospital. The morning after the birth I got transferred to Honiton hospital to have some breastfeeding support.

I had been in Exeter hospital from 8am Thursday morning till 11am Sunday morning being induced and giving birth to my son.

When I was transferred to Honiton I got welcomed by the midwife only they had no idea who I was. I got shown to my room with my fiancé and baby.

When it came to breastfeeding help, the midwife would help me latch my baby then leave me with my fiancé and baby to breastfeed but my son would fall off my breast. As the hours ticked by with me not able to breastfeed my son, my parents and sister came to visit me in the hospital. My sister was so excited to meet her nephew but the midwifes wouldn't let her in the ward as she is still in school (she's 16 years old yet wasn't allowed in) there was nobody else on the ward but me and their excuse was "she could be poorly" she was healthy and hadn't been ill at all for months!! She got very upset and I got very upset too. It got to 8pm and I still couldn't breastfeed my son. It turned out he had a tongue tie that was restricting him from feeding. I asked if I could go home since I'd been in hospital for 4 days now and just wanted to spend time with my new son in the comfort of my own bed and home. The midwife refreshed to let me leave and said I can't feed my baby so I need to stay in. I told them I wanted to try bottle feeding him instead and they still wouldn't let me go home. My fiancé then went out and said I wanted to go home as I'd had enough and we were going to try breastfeeding when we got home and if I still couldn't do it, I would bottle feed him then come back the next morning.

I don't know how they treat people when giving birth there but from my own personal experience just after giving birth and being transferred to Honiton, I would NOT reccomend going to Honiton! Go to Exeter, their amazing and so supportive and lovely!
