"The staff deserve recognition"

About: North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital The Royal Victoria Infirmary / Paediatric surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

My 6 year old daughter had an awful accident where a set of swings collapsed on her resulting in a nasty head injury. We were visiting my mums caravan at the time so was an hour away from home in Sunderland. The paramedics that initially attended were absolutely fantastic with Lillie, explaining what they were doing and trying to keep her as calm as possible. Lillie was then blue lighted to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care where there was a fanatic team waiting for her. All of the staff who saw her from the doctors, nurse practitioners, anaesthetic team etc were all brilliant with her, talking to her to keep her calm and regularly asked if I was OK too. Lillie was swiftly taken off for a CT scan and we didn't have to wait long for the results. After finding out she had fractured her skull and had a small bleed on her brain she was quickly & efficiently transferred to the RVI for further treatment. I feel the staff deserve recognition for the amazing job they have done and how fabulously they worked as a team. Thankfully Lillie is well on the road to recovery and just spent 2 nights in hospital for observation. We are so lucky to have such amazing people helping us, THANK YOU!

Dear Lilubie,

Goodness me – as a parent, I’m trying to imagine just how frightening this must have been for you to witness? Poor Lillie – not what she needed on her holidays at all?

Thank you for sharing your story with us. Your review describes a beautiful example of why it is so important for the health care system to work together to provide effective care at times of urgent need: - from the paramedics who picked Lillie up just outside Scotland and get her safe and calm, to the receiving team at the Northumbria who provided rapid access to the assessment and scans she needed and finally the team in Newcastle who were able to provide her with specialist brain surgery.

I am so pleased to hear she’s doing so well – our teams will be chuffed too. It’s what matters to them most of all when they go to work each day.

Give her a hug from us – hope a far less eventful family holiday follows soon,

Annie
