"Lack of security - open to anyone just walking..."

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Accident and emergency

Negative review: My mother has been in the hospital since Tuesday arriving in an ambulance after a fall. I left the hospital at 2am in the morning and there was no one around apart from someone sitting behind the reception desk who looked fast asleep.

When I left on the Thursday night there were three men having a very heated exchange about who could visit and who could not visit, right by the wards, again no one around and no one to advise at reception.

On Friday night leaving the hospital just after 8pm and there is about 20 people on the grass outside the hosptial - near the wards - with dogs and children running around - drinking from cans of beer celebrating it would appear a patient's birthday ( person sitting in a wheelchair).

This is outside a hospital near wards with sick people in, how can this be allowed? again no security around and no one to speak to or mention.

Positive review: On arriving at the hospital the staff were very caring and attentive and helped make my mother comfortable. The consultant on duty was very kind and courteous and advised that they would arrange for her to have something for the pain, which arrived very quickly. the nurses on duty both of them were incredibly kind and helped settle my mother.

We had blood tests and xrays and CT scan all before 9pm, which I was very impressed with. I was kept up to date as to what was happening and again when she was in the CDU the nurses, in particular the auxilliary staff were very kind and accommodating.

Security:

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding the visibility of security at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Information and feedback such as this from our patients and visitors is extremely important and invaluable in managing the delivery of our services.

I am responsible for ensuring that the Trust provides a safe and secure environment for our staff, patients and visitors and the security service provided to the Trust meets our exacting standards and that where shortcomings are found, they are addressed.

Unfortunately, as the date was not provided, I am unable to fully investigate your report in relation to the person behind the reception counter who looked fast asleep. The main reception is staffed throughout the day by our dedicated reception team and after hours by a security officer, who on occasion may have to step away from the desk momentarily, which may explain why you were unable to locate anyone on the second occasion.

In relation to the matter of the large group outside on the grass, security have been instructed to maintain a high profile presence and visibility across the site, which is quite large with many dispersed buildings and so they may not pick up on all issues and incidents immediately. If this group were to cause a nuisance or disturbance, please be assured that security officers would have attended and dealt with the matter.

If you would like your concerns investigated further please contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on 020 8836 4592.

Accident and Emergency:

Thank you for your kind comments, we are working very hard to provide the highest standard of care possible and it is a pleasure to hear such positive feedback about our team. This will be shared with the Emergency Department team, and will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such positive feedback.

Kind Regards
