My father is currently a patient in the Juniper centre (June 2017) because of mental health issues. He was transferred there after being treated for a stroke in another hospital. Basically, mental health issues were preventing him recognising the seriousness of the stroke and preventing him taking medication that would keep him alive. Moseley Hall hospital has a stroke rehabilitation unit, but he refused to go there due to all sorts of paranoid assumptions about the hospital. It was this unit that I thought could most help him. I had concerns about the fact that my father could no longer express himself clearly and logically (due to the stroke) and that this may be interpreted as further mental illness or dementia, but thought that a short stay would still benefit him.
Two days ago, my father told me of two officials from 'the tribunal' visiting him unexpectedly. He was very very distressed and felt that it was all a trick on him as he was vulnerable and should have had the opportunity to have a family member with him. I thought he was correct. The staff member I spoke to didn't seem to really see my point, but never the less seemed to take note of my concerns that he would not have been able to express himself clearly due to the stroke, not mental illness. They promised to pass my concerns to the Doctor.
I was invited to attend a patient care meeting with the Doctor today (receiving the invitation 2 weeks in advance) and stated that as I would not be there in person, I could join in via speaker phone and that I had joined in this way in the past. Today is the day of the meeting and I have been ringing at the proposed time and every 15 minutes afterwards, only to be repeatedly fobbed off - even being told that as the meeting is taking place, its best for me to ring back afterwards!!!! It is now 3 hours after the scheduled meeting time, I have rang numerous times, no one has rang me back (not even to say whether there is a delay) and my father has no doubt had decisions made about his care.
I realise, from past experience, that the only way I will get anything resembling a timely or respectful response is to write a complaint here. I told that to the staff over the phone and they seemed to indicate that it would be OK with them! So here it is.
Concerned daughter, Kent.
