"I had a squint surgery recently"

About: St James's University Hospital / Ophthalmology

I am not satisfied with the hospital.

The surgeons are great in terms of what they are doing, they have done a great job with my eyes, I can't complain.

But what I did not like are the nurses (some of them), assistants and other medical personal, and the chaos overall in the hospital.

First of all, before the surgery I was going to get a general anesthetic, so they brought me in to the anesthetic room and as I understand, in this little room, there should be only me, anesthetist and his/her assistant. However, while they were putting me in to sleep, the surgeon came in to read some documents (why?) then behind me from the doors leading into the corridor, a few nurses (I hope they were nurses, I didn't see them) were coming in and out of the room. I felt like I was not in the hospital but in a busy street with a heavy traffic!!! And all these made me worried hell of a lot before the surgery!!!

Then after the surgery, when they brought be into the general wards. They did not allow me to sleep even for one hour! I knew that they were going to finish their shifts at 8pm, but allowing me to sleep for one hour wouldn't make any harm to anyone, and I still could walk out from the hospital before 8pm. The nurses were loud and doing everything to make me leave, and I would say they did not even try to do it politely, they were kind of a rude! (again, not all of them, there were a couple of nice nurses)

So it s all left me with disgusting feelings, I hope to forget all this experience as soon as possible.

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

I am very sorry to read that you had such a distressing time whilst in our care.

The level of service that you have described is not what we wish to offer.

I have passed your comments onto the manager for Ophthalmology for information however it would be beneficial for our services and for future patients if you could discuss the matters you have raised further with our Trust’s Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS). This would also allow us look into the matters you have raised more thoroughly.

Please call our Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0113 206 6261 or alternatively email patientexperience.leedsth@nhs.net
