"A simpler and safer option should have been available"

About: East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Lincoln County Hospital

(as the patient),

Hurt my lower back in my house and was unable to move from the bed. ambulance sent 2 hours after calling 111. The ambulance crew were exceptional.

I did not choose to go to Lincoln County...the excellent ambulance crew made a decision that it was necessary, and made my journey there as comfortable as possible after carrying me in a chair out of the house. it took some time and morphine to move me. On arrival I was treated like a time waster by several of the staff including the doctor, and the end result was only a prescription and a large shot of morphine that made me very ill once I'd left and had no medical supervision - this was not safe!

In hospital I blocked the bed for ages while a simple prescription was prepared and then, having been given the large dose of morphine, I was pushed outside by a nurse then left in a cold corridor in a chair until my partner could get my car to A&E. Once she arrived with the car nobody helped me into the car when there were clearly nurses doing their best to avoid helping! I appreciate the pressure staff may be under, but they are paid to do this job and should be more professional and caring in their approach when patients are clearly in significant pain and forced out to get into a small car when in agony! On the journey home lost consciousness and couldn't speak to tell my partner the pain I was in. Once home I had to crawl very slowly back into my house across the gravel and drive on my stomach at 6 AM in the morning; I then spent the night lying on the floor exhausted!

I would imagine moving me to hospital and my extremely upsetting and painful journey home has caused more damage to my back. However, as nobody physically examined me or conducted any diagnostics - we will never be able to know or compare this to my last episode. Having experienced this before surely some sort of diagnostic or examination should have taken place - I understood the NHS preached avoidance in preference to treatment? Clearly this approach was not understood by the doctor who 'looked after' me.

All this torture was unnecessary when a prescription could have been issued for me at home if such a system allowed that to happen. Throughout my experience I knew the end result would be bed rest and drugs, as did the ambulance crew - however, we had to endure this nightmare to get to that point! The money, ambulance time and A&E time involved was a complete waste of resources when a far simpler and SAFER option should have been available. I will be writing to the Chief Exec and Health Secretary to make my point ...... the lack of help and compassion was poor and reflects badly on clinical professionals. However a porter was excellent and offered my partner a cup of tea when she really needed it - they should be singled out for displaying the compassion the clinical staff clearly lacked!

Update posted by Gobi (the patient)

I'm very grateful someone is taking an interest - notwithstanding the pain and poor quality care, I am more concerned that the 'system' requires a patient to be subjected to such a harrowing journey. The cost of prescribing by a suitable professional at home must be cheaper than the costs accrued by my the needless diversion of valuable resources in my case.

Thank you to the PALS team for looking into my case.

Dear Gobi

Thank you for your comments about our staff and the care you received.

We appreciate your comments and will ensure that the staff who attended you receive your compliment. You have expressed how you didn’t feel an ambulance was necessary and I can see that you initially rang 999. We are working very closely with NHS 111 to ensure our resources are utilised efficiently and effectively.

I hope you are recovering well.

Kind Regards,

Richard Hunter
Ambulance Operations Manager
Lincolnshire Division
