"Horrendous pregnancy from start to finish"

About: Liverpool Womens Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Myself personally had a horrendous pregnancy from start to finish, I suffered severely with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. I also suffer with miscarriages so always monitored carefully and I can't fault my midwife in clinic. However I thought the consultant was extremely rude, I didn't want a c-section in the first place it was advised I sees consultant about one due to previous birth, miscarriages and the fact I had been so sick, and they were extremely rude.

From 19 weeks on I had horrendous pains constantly and leaking water, my midwife in clinic was concerned but of course nobody else batted an eye lid. At 33 weeks my waters broke along with a placenta abruption. I was dripping blood and I was told not to panic by the hospital staff. I was kept in hospital and put on antibiotics for 2 days and told my baby had to be born due to past history and the fact my waters had gone and I had a placenta abruption.

I had to stay in hospital but was booked for induction in the evening 3 days later. 1 hour before my induction time I was told I was unable to have the induction as the neonatal unit was full what an absolute appalling excuse. What would they do if someone came in after 24 weeks pregnant with triplets that had to be born there and then? On this note my antibiotics had also stopped by this time my waters had been gone over 100 hours. I was in labour for nearly 24 hours with an "over active baby" of about 7 hours and again nobody cared because they were all busy in theatre doing c-sections.

Instead of going on to a trans ward after delivery (her body temp dropped to 33 degrees) I was put in the very corner of a normal ward where we would see a midwife if lucky enough once a day as they are far too short of staff! Then her jaundice levels rapidly dropped so she needed lights, this poor baby came out of incubator at 10 o'clock in the morning and was discharged before 4pm exactly the same day nearly 7 weeks early! A day after being discharged we ended up in alder hey with a 14% birth weight drop and a massive temp drop called as hyperthermia.

2 weeks later we were back in the intensive care unit with meningitis and septicaemia caused by STREP B! And now she's got it again for the second time in the space of 9 days! Yet the Liverpool Women's stopped my antibiotics when all kinds was present in my urine samples and my baby was given absolutely nothing! I will never ever even consider using this hospital again just on that matter. But ever since all my problems the week she was born my stomach etc has not been the same and I'm now having to have all kinds of tests. No wonder they want to close the hospital it's absolutely appalling and the complaint service can not even bother to reply back

We are very sorry to hear of your experience in the Maternity department. Unfortunately women may have to await in hospital to ensure that they can be observed whilst awaiting induction of labour. This is for the safety of mum and baby. The theatre cases and inductions of labour are prioritised by the Consultant on call. All women are reviewed on a daily basis and have a clear management plan in the clinical notes.

As we can see from the information you have provided there are various aspects of the care you and your daughter received that are causing you a great deal of concern. We would really welcome the chance to discuss your individual case in more detail with you so we can look further into the specific issues you have raised.

To arrange this discussion please contact our PALS team on 0151 702 4353 or via email on PALS@lwh.nhs.uk to arrange a suitable date and time.
