At 34 weeks pregnant I was referred to the Maternity Day Unit at Hairmyres Hospital for weekly (sometimes twice weekly) scans and monitoring of my baby, due to several possible risk factors being detected at a routine midwife appointment. I was looked after by two members of staff here, sonographer, Angie and midwife Margaret.
Angie is an absolute credit to the NHS; Her professional yet warm and friendly manner immediately put me at ease and I struck up a rapport with her instantly. She explained to me exactly what she was doing and why at each appointment and at no point did I feel bamboozled with medical jargon. She took lots of time to answer all my (numerous) questions fully and having had years of midwifery experience prior to becoming a sonographer, is in the unique position to not only provide the scan and measurements etc but she is also able to offer practical advice on how this information translates in real terms to the delivery of the baby. The fact that she was so knowledgeable, coupled with her warmth and kind, caring manner turned what could have otherwise been a worrying time into a positive experience, and as an anxious first time mum, that meant so much to me.
I was also looked after by Margaret at the day unit. She had such a lovely manner and was so kind and reassuring. Again, at each appointment everything was clearly explained, and I was repeatedly asked if I was ok with everything she was doing. I was always asked if I had any questions -
which were answered fully and Margaret made it very clear to me that if I had any questions or fears that I was to phone her or come into the unit.
I feel that throughout my experience at the Maternity Day Unit I was so well cared for and looked after by these two ladies that they deserve specific mention. I would like them both to know how much I appreciate all their hard work and would like these comments passed onto them if possible as they are both superstars and deserve special recognition.
