"Care after heart surgery"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Intensive Care Unit Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Cardiac Surgery

(as a relative),

My husband had heart surgery at the Golden Jubilee Hospital Clydebank it was a 100% success and was transfered to Crosshouse icu Kilmarnock they were great and the hd unit also.

He was then moved into ward 4d a boarding ward and it was a nightmare. I feel like the care was nil all, the good work prior to going into ward was nearly undone every nurse gave you a different story as to his progress.

One said he was going about like speedy gonzalos with his zimmer next nurse said his balance was terrible it took 3 to put him on a commode so we did not who to believe.

2 and a half weeks he was in there. In my opinion, It was a disgrace.  The care he received in that ward. We aked about rehab at Irvine Central as that was the consultants plan but it was disregarded and they discharged him with medication or letter for doctor had to send my grandson down to get them all I got was fone call saying a plan had been set up and starting the next night.  I said he is in hospital and they said he is coming home tomorrow afternoon and all came with was his toilet bag he had a cafatar attached his leg they put on a week past Saturday and they forgot he had it on.

I got a phone call  from a cardiologist who went to see him at his bedside and got an empty bed was not told hed been discharged I said nor was I, I feel like he was just thrown out and it was him who told me to write his story on this page another thing when you phoned the ward nobody answered for hours.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Whisky,

I am so sorry to hear that you feel we have been detrimental to your husband’s health and recovery. It is also very disappointing that you got contradictory information that is not helpful at all. Would you like to discuss this with senior member of 4D or a senior manager about this? If you would like to, please contact me on 01563 826222 or email me on Eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.

Meantime I will pass this to the Management for their reflection. Thank you for telling us your story. While it clearly has some learning for us, I will also be happy to pass this to the ICU team. It is good to share both sides of the story.

I really do hope your husband is now recovering, however, if you would like to call one of the following numbers, they will help to explore what the options are for your husband’s rehab -

University Hospital Ayr, Rehabilitation Tel: (01292) 614550

University Hospital Crosshouse, Rehabilitation Tel: (01563) 827175

Best wishes,

Eunice

Dear Whisky,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback

I'm delighted to hear the surgery went well for your husband and that his stay in ICU and in High Dependency in Crosshouse was good

I'm so sorry to hear of your much less positive experience of his care within Ward 4D, Crosshouse

This ward was created in November 2016 to accommodate additional winter beds. In staffing these beds we have used a number of temporary / new staff and this is likely to have resulted in the communication issues and lack of continuity you describe. These general nurses would have limited knowledge of cardiac rehabilitation and hence the conflicting information. The discharge planning process should have been much more robust and I sincerely apologise on behalf of 4D staff for this.

We have limited clerkess support in this ward therefore there are, unfortunately, delays in answering the telephone

I know my explanation will be of little consolation to you but I felt it would be useful to share the background information. From our perspective we take your feedback very seriously and will learn from this when considering any further bed changes

I hope your husband continues to improve.

If you wish to discuss this further, I will be happy to. Please contact Eunice and we will arrange a suitable time to meet.

Kind regards,

Mary Harper

Clinical Nurse Manager

There is no point in my meeting with anyone the damage is done. I don't think my husband should have been in that ward with nurses who had no experience of cardiac patients.I am still getting phone calls with doctors and dietitian and speech therapist all looking for my husband in the hospital they just cannot believe his hasty discharge. He was not ready for discharge so the person who authorised his discharge should be held responsible. The bed allocater also should make sure patient are put in wards with the proper nursing care.At least I have my husband home and safe.
