"My experience with bowel cancer"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / General Surgery (Ward 5) University Hospital Hairmyres / Intensive Care Unit University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical Oncology

(as the patient),

I had a tumour in my bowel which was diagnosed during a colonoscopy. I was living alone at the time as my partner was working abroad, so I had to deal with the news on my own (he returned shortly afterwards). The colorectal team, led by surgeon Mr McMillan, were efficient and understanding. I was given a date for removal of the tumour 3 weeks hence and in the time preceding the operation I was scheduled for various tests, scans and xrays. I had never had a scan or spent a night in hospital before this happened so, naturally, I was scared and apprehensive. Everyone I met at Hairmyres in the run up to surgery led me thru the procedures with courtesy and kindness. On the day of my surgery I arrived at Hairmyres in a fairly petrified state, but everyone involved explained their role to me and made the whole terrifying process as easy as possible.

The operation went well, due to the proficiency of Mr McMillian and co, and I had 4 days in hospital to recover before returning home. I cannot emphasise enough how competent and caring I found each and every member of staff involved in my recovery. . I was particularly grateful for the care taken to protect my personal dignity, which is just as important as any other aspect of care. I met a lot of staff, as I was moved 6 times during my 4 night stay, and everyone was a delight. I’m just sorry I can’t mention every single one of them by name, but limited space and my limited memory won’t permit.

So many, many thanks to Mr Mcmillan (and your team) for your skill, attention and bad jokes. Also to all the staff at Hairmyres involved in my recovery from lovely Lesley in ICU, via Ward 6 and Ward 4 (can’t remember all the room numbers) to the fabulous Emma and the ERAS team, you have my eternal gratitude.

Dear Another English Patient

Many thanks for taking the time to post your very positive comments. I understand and appreciate your apprehension given the diagnosis.

I am delighted to hear that you were happy with the care you received despite the number of moves.

I will share your comments with Mr McMillian, the staff in ICU, Ward 6, Ward 4, the ERAS team, Emma and Lesley as they will be pleased to hear that your experience was such a positive one.

I wish you well on your journey to recovery.

Gordon
