Over the Easter weekend I was admitted as an emergency to the PRUH (Surgical 6) and was quickly diagnosed with kidney cancer.
I was transferred to Kings under the care of the Urology team and two weeks ago underwent surgery to remove the kidney. During my stay at Kings I was cared for by the staff on Coptcoat Ward.
My diagnosis totally unexpected and I real shock.
I would like to place on record my sincerest thanks to those who cared for me.
This of course includes the surgeons and consultants but also the nurses, the catering staff and even the cleaners.
The urologist who first saw me visited me everyday over the Bank Holiday weekend reassuring me as to what was going to happen, when and by whom.
The nursing staff at the PRUH were the personification of kindness and understanding and the food was first rate as well!!
The urology surgeons at Kings were incredibly patient and explained the situation in terms that I could understand.
They genuinely listened to my questions, explained procedures and engendered a sense of trust.
There are no words to explain how much this meant to me.
On operation day I met the surgeons again and the anesthetist who gently confirmed my understanding of the process.
Following surgery one was kind enough to ring my sister to explain how the procedure went.
The staff on Coptcoat ward (and I mean all of them) truly cared for me and had me up on my feet the following day.
Since discharge I have seen the surgeons for the pathology results.
Again they went through the findings with me with compassion and a genuine sense of care.
What I found so comforting at this appointment was witnessing both surgeons meeting and greeting their respective patients personally in the waiting area prior to seeing them.
It was yet another example of positive human behaviour at its best and something I shall never forget.
All I can say is this, if you are unfortunate enough to contract renal cancer and you are cared for by the Urology Team at Kings, you are in the best possible hands from a medical, nursing and general patient care perspective.
Well done Kings, where would I be without you!!!!!
Please would you send this to the head of the Urology department for their information
