"Unclear Results"

About: Crosshouse Hospital

(as a service user),

Attended an appointment some weeks ago and waited on results for several weeks. I was told I would not have another hospital appointment but that my GP would give me the results. After chasing this up numerous times I was advised that another hospital appointment has been arranged. This worried me significantly and although the GP was able to read the letter from the consultant to me, it was not clear and the GP told me they could not elaborate as this was not their specialist field; I agree with this. Now I am aware that for some reason I have a further appointment with the consultant which is worrying as he initially said he did not need to see me again. Thus I am very worried about the possible outcome. I feel let down and that I am no more informed about my health after a significant time.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Mckindoo,

I can understand why you are worried and I am sorry you have felt let down and scared. It seems that communication could be clearer here, primarily with the interpretation of the consultant's letter to the GP and because you were told you would not due back at the clinic. While you were told that, having a follow-up appointment is common practice, particularly if you have had any tests. Attending a clinic gives the consultant an opportunity to explain any results.

Here are a few suggestions that may help you while you are waiting to attend your clinic appointment. If it was me, I would

- ask the GP to contact the consultant and seek clarification on the content of the letter so they can then help you to understand the current situation

or;

- contact the consultant's secretary in the hope she may be able to shine some light on this. She will not be able to talk about specific health related matters, but may be able to explain the reason for your appointment.

or;

If you would like to contact me off-line I can try to help. Again, I would not be able to tell you anything other that perhaps why you are coming back to the clinic.

My contact details are Eunice.goodwin@apct.scot.nhs.uk and 01563 826222

Kind regards,

Eunice
