"Saved my life"

About: Southampton General Hospital

My admission to hospital was under very bad circumstances. I was in an undiagnosed, severe crohns flare, and was taken in by ambulance. I have aspergers autism, and on arrival I was placed in a quiet bed away from other patients before being transferred to a side room where I could control the lighting and noise more easily to help with my sensory issues.

The learning disability liaison team were amazing at advocating for me, even though I don't technically fall under their jurisdiction. The hospital worked really hard at treating me with the the best care while making reasonable adjustments to my medication delivery and diagnostic tests to better suit my sensory difficulties.

My GI consultant was amazing. They were kind, empathetic, and spoke to me very gently and clearly making sure I understood everything that was happening to me. They also provided me with all the literature I needed in print so I could take it all in at my own pace. My consultant worked really hard to accommodate my autism needs and treat my IBD and after 5 years of feeling awful and being ignored they gave me my life back.

The follow up since my visit has been amazing. The IBD Clinic always call me back promptly if I need anything and are really on top of my care making sure I have regular check ups and monitoring my inflammation markers. I cannot praise their service enough and I will always tell people it's an amazing department.
