"Little care shown for our miscarriage"

About: King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill) / Maternity

(as a relative),

I have just read a description of an experience a lady had 3 years ago. It wasn't very positive and last night my partner and I went through the same experience almost word for word.

My partner is 39 and has been told by her GP that, as an older mother, if she has any pain or bleeding she should go to a and e. She did experience both symptoms and we arrived at kings a and e at late in the evening. We did not leave until 7 hours later having had no care or empathy shown. I think the process for receiving, triaging and then seeing patients is very poor. Obvious easy wins are missed - like calling out patient names louder and speaking more slowly for non English names. No one she spoke to displayed any sympathy or empathy during what was a very sad medical process and after having waited to be seen by a doctor for 6 and a half hours no apology was forthcoming only defensive hand wavy references to being busy. The doctor was not aware that a blood test had already been done and the Irvine sample was 6 hours old - not the best in a fast moving medical situation. The unit has no ability to do a scan so after an external physical examination and administer of codeine we were told to turn up to the "first come first served" morning early maternity unit clinic. The doctor did make a point of making a note of my partners name for this clinic though which seemed to be helpful at the time.

Shattered, we got home at 5: 30 and were back to kings by half nine in the following morning - on approaching the reception desk the receptionist immediately said they were full. My partner started crying, said we were in a and e the previous night and could they check the register. After wading through more defensive rubbish from the receptionist and speaking to a colleague, it was acknowledged that yes we were on the list and we could see someone. That someone turned out to be a nurse rather than a doctor who said we would have to stay until the end of clinic at 12: 30 and there were no guarantees she would be seen. When my partner started crying again the nurse sat behind their desk and waited for her to stop. My partner has been a nurse in the NHS for 20 years and has always prided herself on caring for her charges. She was shocked and disturbed by the lack of empathy at kings - "even cats and dogs know when you are upset and react accordingly". Kings early maternity unit seem to have forgotten even this basic test of emotional intelligence sadly.

So terribly sorry to hear about your experience of our care. I have been in contact with our Director of Midwifery regarding your experience in our EPU and she is very keen to follow up.

Would you be happy to share further details so that we can better undersand your care. In the first instance, you could contact Maxine Spencer direct via email at: maxine.spencer@nhs.net
