"rude staff and bad treatment"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital / Accident and emergency

After being in need of help for over 5 hours with a possible miscarriage, I was taken to RBH by paramedics who were told to bring me in by their maternity ward.

My fist 10 minutes were fine, they moved me to an area with no sick people and the nurse who took blood was a sweety. After this everything changed.

I was placed next to a water cooler in a waiting area, when one of the staff asked me if I was a patient, when I said yes they told me that I was in their way and now theyhad to walk around me to get water( there was another water cooler 3 meters away from me as well).

The toilets were out of order, and when the doctor finally can to see me after waiting about 1 and a half hours they asked me to give them a urine sample. Whilst in the disabled toilet, the only working toilet in the area, the door was constantly thumped on by a nurse telling me to hurry up. I was trying to change my pad and fix the excessive bleeding I was having and trying to make sure I could get urine in the tiny bottle provided.

Once done I was taken into a consulting area. The doctor asked me to tell them the whole story again, but as I start the doctor was taken away by another staff member to see someone else.

I waited 45 minutes and had no one come in to tell me what was happening. Eventually, me and my husbands nerves were so on edge and our 2 year old was playing up from exhaustion (as it was 03:30) I went to find someone to help me. I was told by a person at the desk that the doctor is busy and will still be some time. I told them I could not wait there any longer without help so I was going to go home, to which they happily replied " okay bye then"..... totally heartless and unacceptable from all staff members in the A&E.

The next day I called the maternity ward in the RBH to find out why I was sent there if I was not going to get a scan or be seen to properly. They informed me that scans cannot be done at night time, and the blood and urine tests were to check hormone levels. They were even shocked at the treatment I received that night and said someone should have explained everything to me.

I am now going onto my 4th day in a miscarriage, waiting to have a scan that is not readily available for emergencies to tell me what is happening and I still do not have any results back from the blood or urine samples I gave...... Not good enough!

Now I will not even bother trying to get help from the NHS as they do not seem to care about their patients or their responsibilities as a health care provider.

We offer our sincere apologies for your experience in the Emergency Department. This is not the care that should have been offered and the matron for the area will be happy to look into this further but in order to do this you need to contact her or the Patient Relations Team to provide more details. Contact Matron Brenda Morton on 0118 322 8088 or mobile number 07825 761018. Patient Relations can be contacted on 0118 322 8338 or email talktous@royalberkshire.nhs.uk
