"3b orthopaedic & trauma"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

I stayed in the hospital accommodation for 5 days to help support my dad. Repeatedly asking for a swallowing referral or SALT review as my father had some issues prior to admittance. The staff don't understand soft diet; kept giving him foods that he choked on. They did a swallow test after he had been eating for 3 days & said he was fine. They said they never saw him choking whilst eating. I had to do emergency first aid, hitting him across the back to remove food obstruction. Calling SALT myself today.

Cannula's left dripping or unchanged when loose, soiled bedding left until next shift takes over.

Left in slumped position repeatedly for over an hour, with his legs bent, with a broken hip, not giving a change of position when on his own, & I'm not there to prompt them, being left in his chair all day.

Was dragged up the bed on his sheet, not using slide sheet, catheter was underneath him.

Had to find sick bowls myself & assist dad, nurse couldn't be bothered to help.

No one comes back to tell me about what is happening with his care.

Rude staff refuse to say their names & angry with dad; possibly has some dementia; very confused & unlike himself after operation.

I'm terrified of leaving my dad in their hands, & I needed to come back home, miles away from hospital. He is very scared & frightened; telephone conversations; "Who is looking after me?" "There is no one there in a white coat, I haven't seen anybody." "When are they coming to get me out of the chair?"

I'm calling PALS & also leaving a CQC review today.

Dear Anonymous

We are so sorry and your story was so hard to read. We want to look into this immediately for you. Can I ask that you email me directly Jennie.negus@ulh.nhs.uk with your father's details. I will then be able to ask the Head of Nursing and Matron to speak to you and also investigate the concerns you have raised regarding his care on 3B

Regards

Jennie Negus, Deputy Chief Nurse, Pilgrim Hospital
