"Smoking in the grounds"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow

(as a parent/guardian),

Unfortunately I am a regular visitor to the childrens hospital with my nine year old son, I am totally appalled by the number of people smoking in the grounds of the hospital, both staff, but the majority visitors.

The signage seems to make no difference at all and the levels of some peoples ignorance and indifferance is just staggering!

Surely after spending £545 million on this fantastic hospital surely something needs to be done here to try and stop this unexceptable behaviour?

As a footnote I would add that we attend due to a lung condition, and it's like a slap in face every time you walk pass these people.

Dear IMAC

Thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I am sorry to read about your experience at the Royal Hospital for Children and understand how you feel as your son has a lung condition.

I will share your post with my colleagues in Facilities and ask that they provide some feedback on here to what you have raised.

Best wishes
Lisa

Dear IMAC

Thank you for your comment regarding smoking in the grounds of the hospital campus.

Smoking on hospital grounds is not acceptable and directly contravenes the Board’s policy; however, there are unfortunately a number of challenges in enforcing this that are inherent across the campus, and indeed our other sites.

Despite clear signage throughout the campus, the issuing of guidance notes and smoke detectors on some of our sites, we have not been able to fully prevent smoking within the grounds.

All staff are encouraged to request that patients and visitors refrain from smoking in the grounds and our Facilities Department regularly carry out ad hoc patrols in various areas throughout the hospital to ask smokers to refrain from doing so. This has unfortunately met with limited success as, while a number of people co-operate when asked, regrettably, the majority of people do not, and in some cases have demonstrated threatening behaviour.

We will continue to explore alternative options which will allow us to manage the very difficult issue of smoking on hospital sites.

Kind regards
Mandy Machell, Deputy Site Facilities Manager - Business
