"My partner and child were asked to leave"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Maternity care (Ward 31)

(as the patient),

I had my 20 week scan and had my partner and my 3 year old we girl with me felt that the staff member doing the scan was acting as if they couldn't be bothered so anyways baby wasn't playing game for measurements so got asked to wait in waiting room and try make baby move so we went back in by this time my we girl was tired and very hot and was slightly upset and the staff member asked my partner to leave the room with my kid because she was upset. I think that is appalling behaviour we were meant to find out the sex of the baby but as he had to leave he never got to be their. I think people doing this kind of job should be used to kids coming in and out their rooms really not happy with what happened today.

Dear Sammy1992

Thank you for providing this feedback and I am sorry to hear that your experience attending this scan was not as you had hoped.

It is the policy of the unit that, whilst siblings are able to attend with their parents, we do advise that if they become restless and noisy they may be asked to wait outside the scanning room. The team recognise that this is an important event in your pregnancy and whilst we are keen that this is experienced as a family it is also very important that the Sonographer can operate in a calm, focused and safe way with no distractions to allow the detailed scanning and diagnostic work they undertake.

I am very sorry that you feel the situation was not explained in a sympathetic way and that overall you feel that the Sonographer was not treating you in a manner that you should expect to be treated. I have shared your feedback with the team in order that we use this to consider how we better inform parents of the position regarding children attending and the need for them to occasionally be asked to wait outside the room and, importantly, that all women and their families attending the department feel that they are treated in a caring and dignified manner.

Best wishes

Claire Stewart, Clinical Services Manager

Update posted by Sammy1992 (the patient)

I totally understand this but we were literally in the room seconds and my child wasn't crying, more or less just moaning for her dad to lift her up the attitude of the staff member wasn't pleasant at all. I would totally agree if my child was been loud and screaming but my man didn't even get a thank you or nothing just can u take ur child outside to be honest I felt that the staff member was just very rude from start to finish and I didn't enjoy my scan at all, felt as tho the staff member couldn't be bothered with us but all I can say is thanks for looking at this anyways I hope this improves for the next patients attending scans.
