I collapsed while visiting Greenwich on 29 April and my husband took me to A&E. The department was busy but felt purposeful and highly organised and the admission procedure was extremely efficient. Yes, I had to wait a while but as I was not a high priority - no physical injury, no chest pains or shortness of breath - that was completely understandable.
After initial assessments and blood tests I was eventually seen by a very sincere, interested and kind young doctor who was determined to find out why I had collapsed. The doctor spent a lot of time with me and my husband, asking detailed questions and listening to and thinking hard about my answers.
The doctor sent me for further blood tests and a chest X-ray but only thing they could discover was a very mild heart murmur which was not bad enough to have caused me to feel faint. After further detailed discussion the doctor concluded that this was a vaso-vagal episode of unknown origin. The doctor, then and there, typed and printed out a long and detailed letter for me to take away and give to my GP. I felt so well cared for, and completely reassured.
In all I spent around 5/6 hours in A&E and at no time did I feel that I had been sidelined or forgotten. I cannot recommend Queen Elizabeth's A&E department highly enough and would like to thank all the staff for looking after me so well.
It is very easy to find horror stories about the NHS in the press and online, it's a shame there is so little focus on all the many times it works so well.
"Fantastic treatment in A&E"
