"The treatment the day after was like night and day."

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

I had a bad fall which required an ambulance and a visit to A&E at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

It took quite a while for the ambulance to arrive but understand that I was conscious, not having breathing problems etc. The only pain relief I was offered by the ambulance personnel was Entonox which didn't really do anything.

I was in tears with the pain and when I looked over at the technician they were sitting texting on thier mobile. They didn't speak to me unless I spoke to them. On arrival at the hospital I was taking through to the corridor where a consultant asked the ambulance staff if I had been given any pain relief except Entonox to which they replied no.

They then escorted us through to minors and went to speak to the staff at the desk. There was approx. 2 bays with curtains drawn and the rest were empty. The Dr came back and said they are full here you will need to take her out to the waiting area. I was taken out to the main waiting area and left - no pain relief. Fast forward to a few hours later and 2 paracetamol and a brufen for relief.

I was 'seen' by a consultant. My arm was in a sling provided by the ambulance service. The Dr removed the sling and asked me to stand up and let my arm fall by my side. I replied that I didn't think I could, they stated 'I think you can' I slowly lowered my arm and they then asked me to do certain movements. Eventually I asked to sit down as I was feeling lightheaded.

They did a few more checks and then told me I was in too much discomfort to do a proper assessment so I was to make an appointment to return in 10 days to their clinic. They told me not to use the sling and sent me away with paracetamol. I was not x-rayed.

I left with my arm hanging by my side, and experiencing extreme pain when I moved. The following day my GP sent my back to A&E to get an x-ray. I had a fractured humerus. Firstly I am disgusted, shocked, horrified and deeply concerned at my treatment  but also have to say that the treatment the day after  was like night and day.

The staff were excellent, receptionist, triage nurse, medical student, Dr, radiographers and nursing staff, they provided a service that makes our NHS great. The staff on my first visit are what gives our NHS a bad name.

Dear Vanilla

Thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I am sorry to read about your experience in the Emergency Department at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, this is not how we want any of our patients to feel. I am not able to comment on the clinical aspect of your care. However, please be assured that I will share your comments with the General Manager for Emergency Care. I would also like to thank you for your kind words regarding the staff the following day.

I hope you are now recovering well after your fall.

Best wishes
Lisa

Dear Vanilla

Thank you so much for taking the time to feedback and I am so sorry to hear about your experience of the care provided by the ambulance service after you fell. I am concerned to read about the standard of care that you received and the behaviour of the Technician. I would really like to look into your case more closely and be able to feedback to you and to the staff involved.

To be able to correctly identify the case, I would need some more details. Can I ask you to contact me on 0131 314 0003 or at martinesposito@nhs.net?

In the mean time, on behalf of the Scottish Ambulance Service, please accept my sincere apologies for the standard of care you received on that day and I do hope that you are recovering well.

Take care

Martin.

Dear Vanilla

Thank you for getting in touch with me. Hearing more details of the case from your perspective was extremely fascinating and I will ensure that we learn from your experience.

With the information you provided I have been able to identify the ambulance crew who attended you on that day and will ensure that your feedback is shared with them.

I was glad to hear that your arm is slowly getting better.

Take care

Martin.

Update posted by Vanilla (the patient)

I wanted to say 'thank you' to Martin from the ambulance service for keeping me updated on the services response to my story. I feel it is also extremely important that I say a huge thank you to the staff at my GP practice. The day I had to return to A&E they were fantastic especially the practice nurse who in my opinion went above and beyond. The past couple of years have been a real challenge for me and my GP has been there for me through tears and tantrums. Couldn't ask for more.
