"Extremely Disorganised"

About: Frimley Park Hospital / Ophthalmology

I had an issue with my eye which was giving me double vision.

My GP arranged an emergency appointment and I was seen the same day (6th April) by an optometrist and a consultant. I needed to have various blood tests and an MRI. An appointment was made a week and a half later to follow up. On arrival I was told my appointment was cancelled, I hadn't been made aware and I was given no explanation why. The receptionist seemed confused but advised that another appointment had been made for me on 7 July.(current date was 12th April)

Nobody seemed to be able to advise if the results of my MRI were available and I was told it was unlikely as they usually take 4 weeks. I was currently unable to drive or work so felt that it was quite urgent. Eventually a nurse managed to speak with another optometrist who had a spare 20 minutes. I saw this optometrist who had no information on my situation. I literally had to start over again. I explained everything, a few minutes later he managed to tap into the computer system and find the results of my MRI scan and blood results... which thankfully were all clear. They confirmed that as yet there was no further information on my condition. They made some prisms to fit on my glasses and put a patch on one lens of my glasses which was a great help. Another appointment was made for me on the 28th April to see a consultant. It again was a different consultant. They weren't aware that I hadn't been told about what my condition was and explained to me that I had something called Sixth Nerve Palsy. They didn't know why. When I told them I was diabetic, they seemed to find this quite amusing and explained that they weren't aware and it was actually quite common in people who are diabetic and may take up to 3 months to get better, they said they'd like to see me in 3-4 weeks for a follow up. I asked if a letter could be written so that I could forward onto my place of work as it had been nearly a month now not being able to drive and I work with computers so it was very difficult being able to see clearly. I went to reception to arrange the appointment but the earliest available appointment they could book me in for was 22nd June (7 weeks later)

Today is the 12 May. I still haven't received a letter to pass onto my employer who are putting pressure on me as I haven't been working since 6th April (6 weeks)

I have been calling the consultants secretary for the last week but cannot get through, until this morning. I explained who I was, they said my appointment on 22nd June has been cancelled. Doctor is on leave. I asked about a letter, they said they will get back to me. I'm doubtful.

It seems as though when you do eventually get an appointment to see someone they do the best they can but the disorganisation surrounding it is overwhelming. I find it a disgrace that nobody makes you aware that appointments are being cancelled.
