"Experience could have been avoided"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as the patient),

I was taken into wishaw general hospital 2 weeks before I was due, I got told on the Thursday night that I was in early labour. I then got sent home that evening. On the Friday afternoon I was experiencing severe pains in my stomach and was advices to go to wishaw, I arrived at wishaw, was seen by a doctor that told me my baby was lying breach and was told me the risks that could happen if my waters break, such as the cord coming first and cutting off the oxygen to the baby. The doctor told me I would not get out on the Saturday without my baby, and was transferred to the ward around 3am.

The next morning the consultants came round and moved my baby into position but by the time the doctor had moved the baby moved back into the left side. The doctor then continued to tell me that if my waters did break I would have plenty time to get to wishaw if the cord did come first (baring in mind the doctor the night before told me I would not have time and would not get out). I was then discharged that morning. The following Friday I was seeing my midwife and had reduced movement (one week over due). She then transferred me to wishaw again to be monitored. I arrived at wishaw and was taken right away to the ward and was getting kept in. The registrar came round that day and said I would be taken for a C-section on Saturday. The consultant then came round on the Saturday morning again and called me by the wrong name and told me my first labour went perfectly (this was my first baby). I was very angry and upset by this point, as the doctor continued to tell me they were leaving me to my due date which was 8 days ago. The doctor then said they were leaving me to my induction date. I was left in a mess. The sister of the ward came round due to my unhappiness and said she can put me on the list for induced on the Monday. The consultants on the Monday came round and wanted to break my waters in theatre and put the baby's head into position. This was done at 2pm, in theatre I was 2cm dilated. By 6pm that night I was only 4cm, then at 8pm I was still 4cm and at 12pm I was still 4cm. I was drifting in and out. Was on gas and air and had an epidural that did not work. I was then taken to theatre to get an emergency section. Me and baby were both in distress. Taken to theatre I had to get the spinal injection as they gave me that and lay me on the bed my body went into shock, my body was lifting off the table and my blood pressure raised to 206.   It seemed that not one medical profession present had ever seen this. I then began to get severe pains in my head as though someone was squeezing my skull and wouldn't stop, I lost vision and could hear. The doctors in my notes said they lost me for 20 minutes. They got the baby out within 6-8 minutes of this happening and was perfect.  I had 25 medical staff in the room with me and not one could tell me what was happening to me. I had 15 different drugs put into my body to try and calm it down. They eventually stabilised me and took me up to the labour room. At 3am in the morning I was taken for a CT scan which came back clear. I wasn't aloud out of bed for 48 hours. I had 2 midwifes by my bedside at all times. On the Wednesday morning around 2am I was taken to the normal ward and was left on my own with my baby (which I hadn't held yet) I was still stuck in bed and could not move. I still had a catheter in as well. My baby was crying and screaming and I couldn't not reach him. I felt the Midwifes during the night were very unhelpful and make me feel as though I kept annoying them.

My overall experience of the hospital was horrible, I feel I had a near death experience and was discharged with no answers of what happened or if it could happen again. I go to see doctors on the 19th may to try and get some answers to see if this would ever happen again. One of my doctors on the Thursday I was discharged asked why I wasn't sectioned weeks before and this could have been avoided.

Dear thegirleveryoneknew

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on patient opinion.

On reading this I am very concerned in regards to the care and advice you have received within our Maternity Unit here at Wishaw General Hospital.

I am really keen to make contact with you by telephone. Would it be possible for you to contact me here at Wishaw General Hospital on 01698 366363 to discuss this further. I am in my office tomorrow (Wednesday) This will allow me the opportunity to look at your maternity notes so that I can investigate this fully and contact you again once this is done.

I would really appreciate to hear from you.

Kind Regards

Lyn
