"Saturday night"

About: Gloucestershire Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

I took my son to A and E after advice from Stroud Hospital doctor at 8pm Saturday evening. He had acute tonsillitis, pyrexia, tachycardia, vomiting and was positive for the computerized sepsis screen. Despite saying ? sepsis on his notes we were waiting for an hour before being seen. Then a nurse took blood pressure, temp etc and said they would be back to take blood shortly. To shorten the story the staff were doing their best under a lot of pressure. By the time my son saw a doctor and was admitted for IV antibiotics and fluids nearly 4 hours had passed - good job it wasn't sepsis!! He was taken by the porter to ward 2b where the porter helped him with his drips and canula and onto the bed. Nobody came to explain what happens next. After at least 1/2 hour I went to find a member of staff to ask if they might like to come and look at him - maybe take his temperature and blood pressure and maybe explain what he should do as never been in hospital before. It was a worrying experience to be truthful as everywhere we went it was woefully understaffed.I feel sorry for all the staff trying to do their job under such great pressure. Good job I have previously worked in a hospital environment as knew what to ask for......
