"Told a diTold to go home without seeing a doctor at discharge"

About: Victoria Hospital / Respiratory Medicine

(as a relative),

My sister was admitted to Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy with suspected sepsis. Admitted to Admissions Unit 2 where the nursing staff were more than excellent. However, tests showed she had pneumonia and was told later that day that a respiratory consultant had been called to make the decisions on her care. Said consultant did not appear till 2 days later and in the meantime she had been moved into a side room. A disturbingly long time to be waiting for information and decisions - all the time on antibiotic drip and oxygen.

A visit from chest experts was made 5 days after she has been admitted and discussions made about her low oxygen sats. She was told that she would continue the care she was on until her oxygen levels were at an appropriate level. When levels were fine the next day she was told the said Doctors would visit to discuss further care and hopefully discharge timing. Throughout the dya she waited for a visit until eventually at night a phone call was made saying that she could leave and a discharge letter would be posted to her! She came home with no medical examination, explanation or follow up advice from a Doctor. We constantly hear anecdotes about people who wait hours to get home because apparently "they cant leave without seeing the Doctor" - so the casual attitude and indifference in this case defies belief.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback; as a team we appreciate your positive comments and I will ensure these are passed on.

It is disappointing that you feel elements of your sister's care fell short of what you expected. I would be keen to find out more about this and seek additional information to enable me to direct these concerns to the most appropriate person.

If you feel this would be helpful then please contact me directly on 01592 729950 where we can discuss how to take this forward. I am on duty today until 1700hr and thereafter I am back on duty from Monday, 0930hr - 1930hr.

Kind Regards

Gillian
