"SRP changed and saved my life"

About: One Recovery Bucks

(as the patient),

I was three years sober 25 years ago and my best friend of 50 years died and I looked after him before he died. I got divorced after 32 years around the same time and I beat someone up which led me to court. I could not deal all three event happening to me at the same time. I stopped eating and started to drink between 150 and 180 units of alcohol a day.

I went to the doctor because I wasn't feeling well and he said I thought you would die of cancer. I ended up in hospital and the consultant said if I continued like that I was going to die 3 months. I had to make a decision whether I wanted to live or die. I made the decision to live and the doctor referred me to STARS Wycombe and a key worker advised to reduce intake gradually because stopping abruptly would be harmful. It was difficult in the beginning but I went on SRP (structured recovery programme) and that helped me stop drinking eventually. My key worker was brilliant. It would be helpful for Key worker to plan post SRP.

What SRP did for me changed my life and saved it. It helped me understand myself and how to be honest with myself and other people.

Thanks so much for taking the time to feedback.

It's fantastic to hear that you achieved abstinent with the support of SRP and your keyworker and now seem in a much better place after all the hardship you experienced.

I am interested to hear you didn't feel like leaving SRP was planned, I will discuss with the team how we can improve the process so the transition from a very structured treatment programme to the recovery support available via our Recovery Network. Remember just because you have successfully completed SRP there is still groups that you can attend daily to support your continued recovery including the fellowships and SMART recovery run from our site.

Wishing you all the best with your continued recovery.

Tracy
