My husband had a bike accident and broke his collarbone recently. He was treated in A&E at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham and the care he received was fantastic. He was admitted for one night and was given an appointment at the fracture clinic for the following day. At this appointment he was told the break would need to be plated and pinned. He was put on the emergency surgery list and this is where the problems began. We have to phone every day at 6am to see if he is on the list and if he is, get him there by 7. 30am. He is in pain (yes, he's taking the meds but can feel the bones moving and it's a pretty nasty break) and as each day passes, he's growing more concerned about his recovery being impaired because of the delay. He's a very quick healer usually and very fit but this is all becoming overwhelming. I understand the unit is extremely busy and he is not a life or limb case but the additional stress this is causing surely could be avoided/managed better. We have to have a contingency plan every day for work, childcare etc and it is exhausting, especially for him because the pain and lack of sleep is draining. Surely there must be a better system than this? The trust's chief executive was on the radio this morning talking about the still enormous funding cuts they are facing and I understand there are pressures from every which way but when someone you love is in pain and you don't know where the end point is, it's very hard to see the bigger picture. It has been nine days and leaving someone in that much pain just seems cruel.
