"Told to see GP to have stitches removed"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

It took me about 3 years to see an orthopaedic consultant last October who agreed I required foot surgery but advised they had a 1 year waiting list.

However after 6 months I got a slot with another foot specialist for mid April. The day surgery at Hairmyres was very efficient, and I felt I had trust in Mr Atiya and the lovely anaestethsist, as well as very caring nurses in recovery.

However, I was told that I would be sent an appointment to have stitches out and wound reviewed after two weeks. This did not happen and after several phone calls I have been advised to go to my gp surgery.

I wonder why NHS Lanarkshire does not see foot surgery patients for stitch removal and review at 2 weeks, allowing patients to ask questions on weight bearing and mobilising. Very little information is given after the op, and I think it would be so easy to cause further problems if mobilising before ready. Ah well, there is always Dr Google and the info leaflets from other NHS orthopaedic services.

Dear Lame dog walker

Thank you for sharing your story with us and the kind words which I will ensure are passed onto Mr. Atiya, the Anaesthetist and Day Surgery Staff,

I am very sorry that your follow up was not as expected and our communication regarding your operation and also removal of your sutures has been lacking.

In order to review this I need some personal details. Can I ask you get in touch with me on 01355 584664 so that I can review the files and explore with the appropriate department what has gone wrong and how we can improve this for you and other patients who access our services.

Thanks

Gordon

Dear Lame dog walker

Thank you for getting in touch with me on the phone. I appreciated the opportunity to explore your poor experience with regards to the breakdown in communication and follow up.

I want to again apologise for the inconvenience caused and hope that you can continue to improve following your surgery; I have shared the communication issues with the site team and am reviewing to ensure there are no further issues similar to yourself for any other patients.

I wish you well on your journey to recovery

Gordon
