"My child felt even worse"

About: Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust / Child and adolescent mental health

(as a parent/guardian),

My son who has SSRI Discontinuation Syndrome was taken to the Lister after two years of not being able to leave the house due to chronic pain. And bid to commit suicide.

They were assessed by a team of two who had very vacant expressions. One of whom I'm sure was a trainee. I ran through my child's history as they were clearly in distress and disorientated.

Upon informing them I was finding the appropriate therapy almost impossible to find they both responded they'd never heard of it. A mental health team who has never heard of Neuro linguistic programming is one thing. Having them admit it, in my view,  is quite another level. I as the lay person explained. They proceeded to tell my distressed child they'd never heard of their condition either and that actually it doesn't exist. I was appalled.

They discharged my son. Upon reaching the exit they could no longer walk with pain. A nurse commented and was so kind. I snapped. I said if my child kills themselves as they have been threatening at least I'll be able to say those two  professionals did nothing.

I readmitted them. They were rushed into a doctor who's exact words were lister mental health team is actually poor, and my child's condition that has had him house bound fir two years does exist. It comes under chronic pain disorder. And long-term pain that's not easily eased would make you suicidal. He said they could call the team back. They treated my child appropriately. It will give them at least some temporary respite.

What in God's name is going on in hospitals. I seriously despair. I'm tired. Exhausted. We currently have a medical negligence case in the offing and then we had this appalling situation. Let's see if this gets us somewhere.

They exacerbated my sons crisis, Absolutely disgusted.

Dear Nonserviam

I am very sorry that you had such a poor experience of our services and we would very much like to look into this further to ensure that no-one else has this type of experience.

In order to do so we will need more information such as you and your son's details.

Please could you contact the PALS and Complaints team (email complaints@hpft.nhs.uk; website: www.hpft.nhs.uk or ring 01707 253916 (9am to 3pm Monday to Friday except bank holidays). If you leave a message and a contact number a member of the team will ring you back.

Thank you for your reply but we contacted PALS before this incident to report the reasons for my sons physical ill health and therefore his mental distress at having been physically ill for two years due to staffover medicating him for a period of 6 years, resulting in parkinsononian symptoms. Their solution was to up the dose further. Then put him onmore medication. All of which had the most horrendous results. Hes off everything now thank goodness thanks to our care and hard work but is still left with dreadful symptoms. So. It was subsequent to reporting this to PALS in the strongest terms we went through that appalling experience at the Lister. We're way ahead of this. To have a mental health team not even know other therapies than CBT is one thing. To invalidate my sons illness to his face whilst in awful pain is another. And to ask the parent to explain what a certain other therapy was is quite appalling. Thanks for your response but having lived this hell for two years we as parents have not sat on our hands. We've been proactive.

I am really sorry that you have not felt able to contact us. We would very much like to investigate further and there is very little we can do to find out who saw you and your son without additional information.

Please contact us so we can take this matter forward.
