"Attending Accident & Emergency with a family member"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

Firstly let me say I have worked in Monklands for a long time and as you can imagine have seen lots of changes. Last week I had to attend A & E with a family member and had a wait of 2 plus hrs after triage, the dept was not particularly busy and was shocked at the attitude of some members of staff.

There was one particular nurse who was so rude to several patients. What was more annoying was the nurses were very loud laughing and talking about boyfriends and whether one in particular should go out with him again. Sorry but I don't think patients should be hearing these discussions and it takes away from the profession the respect that nurses are due.

I may add when we saw the Dr she dealt with us in a professional polite manner. To sum up I think the nurses (not all) in this dept need to work on their communication skills Patients should be treated in a polite respectful manner worthy of the job to gain respect from patients alike.

Dear iDRIS

Thank you for taking the time to post your experience of Monklands Emergency Department, I'm sorry that this wasn't a positive experience for you and your relative.

This is not the expected behaviours of my staff, and as you will know we are working very hard within Monklands Hospital to ensure everybody is treated in a dignified, respectful manner.

I'm glad your relative was then seen by a Doctor who managed their care in a polite and professional way.

It is important we learn from all feedback we receive: I'd be very grateful if you could contact Melanie McLean, Patient Affairs Manager, on 01236 713065, to give more details or if you would prefer to meet with me, Melanie can arrange this.

I hope your relative is recovering well.

Kind regards

Ruth
