"Fantastic experience"

About: Southend Hospital / Maternity care

I was looked after thoroughly by all professionals, from sonographer to consultants from being 6 weeks pregnant until I gave birth. i was deemed high risk for various reasons so was given additional growth scans and consultant check ups every 4 weeks from 24 weeks. At my 36 weeks scan my baby was showing to be on the small side so I was advised to go in for extra monitoring twice weekly. The midwives at the ante natal unit were fantastic and reassuring during every one of my visits. I was told by the consultant at 37 weeks that I would be induced on my due date. I was booked in without any problems.

When the day came I was well looked after by the designated midwife, who frequently checked to see if I was ok (sorry can't remember their name). A few hours after being induced I started to get some discomfort so the midwife sorted pain relief for me. They made sure that I was ok up until they did the handover to the night staff and obviously cared greatly that they were doing a good job.

What can I say about the midwife who took over my care? Well, fantastic is an under statement! Thr pain I had was getting much worse very quickly so they gave me some oromorph, which didn't work as well as I'd hoped as I was definitely in labour by then! But they didn't leave my side and was reassuring and supportive throughout. They then advised that I go into a delivery room and less than half an hour later my baby was born! They were brilliant throughout the delivery, as was the co ordinator, who was with them to deliver my baby. Even afterwards, we were not rushed into leaving the delivery room and they made sure I was comfortable. I was well looked after on the central delivery suite from when I arrived that morning until I was taken to post natal approx 4 hours after my baby was born.

The staff at post natal were just as fantastic. They regularly checked my blood pressure (my main reason for being deemed high risk) and made sure I was comfortable. My daughter didn't urinate in her first 24 hours so would not let us go home until she had, and called a paediatrician to check her over, and they also had to administer my anti d injection. We got discharged after they were satisfied that we were both healthy. We were treated with respect and dignity throughout. I would highly recommend this hospital for any maternity service. I just want to say thank you to the midwives, especially on the central delivery suite for everything you did for my family on that day. I will be forever grateful!
