"Swinley Ward Stay"

About: Royal Albert Edward Infirmary / General surgery

(as the patient),

I recently stayed on Swinley Ward. I usually have nothing but the highest praise for the NHS and all services offered however on this occasion I was disappointed and made to feel heart sick.

The atmosphere was apparent from my arrival that rather than a team of nurses it was very much a senior member of staff and staff that seemed under appreciated. I experienced a senior member of staff speaking patronisingly to both patients and staff which I was alarmed by. I didn't encounter any care from this staff member, I just felt a sense of panic at the sight of them.

I had the greatest sympathy for the staff on the Ward who were trying their best however seemed ill equipped in terms of man power against the full Ward of patients. I felt that the ward was run somewhat like a cattle market & privacy & dignity is something that was waved good bye to at the doors of swinley ward. I felt I was sent home too early as did many of the patients I spoke to. I think that this ward is a shadow of what it once was.
