"my traumatic birth at Arrowe Park"

About: Arrowe Park Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I gave birth at Arrowe park hospital last march,I had a bad birth but did have a great midwife who made things that little bit better but after a day I was moved upstairs to the post natal ward and left to struggle on my own. I couldn't walk as i was so weak from all the blood i had lost so had to buzz for someone to take me to the toilet,I had to wait up to 15 mins for this, which made me feel like crying as i didn't know if i would make it. I couldn't get up to go get food when this was served and most of the time nobody came to ask if i wanted anything to eat. The staff gave me the impression that they weren't impressed that i couldn't get up and walk, not once did they say anything nice to me. I hadn't wanted to stay in hospital to be looked after as i had another child at home and i wanted to get home to be with my family. I relied on my husband while he was at the hospital to help me and asked to leave as soon as as i could walk as far as the toilet and back. This ward was obviously under staffed and did not offer what i would call a good standard of care, having a traumatic birth can effect a mother for a long time after the birth.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us of the midwifery care you received during your stay in Arrowe Park Hospital. We were pleased to learn that you felt supported by the midwife caring for you during your difficult labour and delivery, but we are sorry that your postnatal stay did not meet your expectations.

It is extremely helpful as midwives to gain our patients’ views for us to continually reflect on our individual practice to improve the service we offer. At present we are not experiencing any problems with the number of midwives working for us. However, we are currently reviewing our postnatal model of care and your concerns will add value to our discussions. Thank you again for taking the time to comment on the Patient Opinion website.
