"A team to be proud of"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / General medicine Pilgrim Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

My relative was rushed into hospital from the Care Home where she was being looked after. She was suffering from vascular dementia and was suspected of having a seizure. A + E were extremely busy but had the time to care for her in good spirit and both professionally and caringly. She was transferred to the Acute Medical Unit. She was very agitated and kept shouting for help which made life very awkward. So much so that a visitor to the patient in the next bed told her to shut up! She was, again, extremely well looked after and we could not have wished for better care. To cut a long story short, palliative care was discussed on the ward with the ward sister and one of the Doctors. A social worker from adult care was also involved with great professionalism. My relative was then transferred to Ward 8A where we visited late one evening and spoke to the nurse on duty who was brilliant, sympathetic and direct which was good to hear. My relative received all the care one could expect from then until she died on the morning one week later.

Our sincere thanks to all concerned and as I wrote to the Chief Executive, about our experience he had a team to be proud of.

Dear Rombah

First may I please offer condolences on behalf of the Pilgrim team.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us at this difficult time for both you and your family. I will make sure that your thanks are passed on to the teams that you have mentioned.

We, too, are very proud of the teams that we work alongside every day, caring for those patients in our departments with care, compassion, dignity and respect.

We wish you all the best.

Kindest regards

Rachelle Cryan
