"Excellent A&E service and correct diagnosis"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

I visited Chesterfield A&E on a 18 February following a seizure in my sleep the previous night and a range of other symptoms.

All staff I came across were friendly and helpful - screening, reception, nurses and the doctor who treated me. And, always good news in A&E, the wait was not too long despite it being a Saturday evening!

The first check over by the nurse seemed comprehensive, including taking a whole range of blood tests which came back really quickly and have since been complimented on by another hospital as comprehensive and very useful prior to my upcoming operation.

The doctor who treated me was brilliant. Very personable and professional. They listened to all of my symptoms and despite first thinking it was a bizarre list of things combined they persevered and eventually came up with a potential diagnosis of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and said they would get me a referral to neurology.

With my health generally seeming to be in check I was discharged on that basis.

Since this visit I did get a private referral to a neurologist who agreed with the epilepsy theory and ordered an MRI. That scan shows a tumour in my Temporal Lobe which is causing the epilepsy.

Grade A diagnosis from the A&E doctor!

I wondered if the doctors ever get to find out (or actually care?) if they made the correct diagnosis?? If there is any way I can get this message to the doctor and let them know and give them my thanks for their care that evening I would really like that!

Thank you for the great A&E service I received that evening.

Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts and comments about the care you received from staff in our ED department recently.

Although this is a life changing diagnosis for you I was pleased to read that the team gave you a comprehensive assessment, which resulted in your diagnosis.

I will share this with the team and I am sure the doctor who cared for you that evening will be delighted to receive your feedback.

I do hope your forthcoming operation goes well and that you are soon recovering.

With kind regards Sarah Turner-Saint head of communications
