"Doctor's shaking your hand is kind, but can spread germs"

About: Southmead Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I recently had a prostatectomy at Southmead which appears so far to have gone well. In R1 ward, the toilet, showering facility and sinks were appalling. Having said that, all the staff were kind which meant a lot. One cleaner in particular, in her 50's was very fastidious, every little item was cleaned. The Head Nurse was also careful to clean his hands between patients. One older Senior Care Assistant was also particular that visitors and patients should wash and use gel for which I was pleased. I never saw any doctor do this, shaking hands with each patient can spread germs. The remainder of staff should take their lead from the Head Nurse, from where I lay I did not observe correct cleanliness. Kind as they were, they can also kill. All the good work of this cleaner (who are often blamed) can be ruined by others, the message still is not getting through to them. The buildings are very old and hardly fit for purpose, not very nice for those who have to work there or for patients.
