"Short of pain relief"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

I had both knees replaced on the same day with an epidural as pain relief, I felt everything would be fine and was assured it would be too. Sadly when I came around in recovery I was in agony but they told me the ward would sort me out when I got there.

That took three days to get sorted out and boy was I in pain with it. Nobody would believe I was suffering as much pain. They eventually sent for the Pain Sister who told me I could not possibly be having pain with the epidural in. She ran ice down my right leg and asked if I could feel anything which I answered no, it is the other leg that's causing the pain! By this time I really felt that I was not getting anywhere. She said she would try readjusting the needle to see if that would help but it made no difference. Do you remember sister?

Soon they were injecting me with morphine and boy did that work for me but three days I feel is way too long and I sincerely hope lessons were learned from that experience I had at that hospital.

I have had many operations since then and only one was similar. That will be the last one ever in there.
