"A&E and disability"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine

(as the patient),

I broke my knee cap and I have a physical disability, but I've felt this has been ignored. sadly my Ataxia is gonna affect the healing process of my kneecap. At A&E I was giving a leg brace and zimmer and date to see a fracture clinic person, that was it. I feel my notes hadn't been read.

I struggle to walk anyway but on one leg with shakey, poor coordination and balance. luckily I live in a ground floor flat but I've had some falls using this zimmer on one good leg to hop/shuffle. I struggle during the night to get up and getting to the toilet, due to my bladder weakness and pain of broken knee cap. I don't think they know anything about my dissability, Ataxia, it's annoying. some of my family are nurses and shocked at the lack of care iv received which I think is due to having a disability. even my OT is angry at the lack of support. I relise A&E was busy but felt like they just wanted me out ASAP as busy. I think the nhs nurses and doctors need more training in dealing with disability, wheather its deafness or cerebral palsy.

Dear Vickzen, I am so sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied when accessing our service recently and I apologise for your poor experience. I hope you are recovering well from your injury. I have shared your story with the team in the Emergency Department who are really disappointed that you did not receive the level of care and attention they strive to deliver to every patient

We really try hard to improve our services based on the comments we receive from our patients and the discussions we will now have within our teams as a result of your feedback will support us in doing that. I will keep you updated on any changes or improvements we indentify from this.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us your story and again I hope you are feeling better.

Many thanks

Kerry
