I had originally been a high risk pregnancy, due to complications in my previous pregnancy, so St Marys had not been an option for me. However after being discharged from the hospital at 38 weeks gestation, a doctor deemed it fine for me to give birth at the birthing centre.
I had already gotten to know two of the community midwives which work at St Marys, in clinic in which they always gave me great care and were very friendly. So I was delighted that I would be able to give birth at the centre as I knew the staff would be kind and professional and I had already heard amazing reviews.
All went to plan! I gave birth to my beautiful daughter in the New Year at St Marys. I had a pool birth which was fantastic! The midwife would continuously keep filling it with more warm water so I was never in cool water. They were very kind and their person centred care couldn't have been better. The midwife ensured my birthing experience was just as I wanted and would tell me how much of a good job I was doing (which is the kind of positivity you need when giving birth!!).
After my daughter was born the staff at the birthing centre were incredible!! I wanted support with breastfeeding and they helped me at each feed and taught me how to latch my daughter on, how to recognise that she is latched on correctly and the different positions I can feed in. They also brought me, my partner and mum tea and coffee when we wanted and breakfast.
We were never rushed to leave the delivery room to go to the ward. We were able to relax and sleep (as we had been up all night!!). The birthing suites did not look hospitalised and they were set out lovely, had a comfortable bed and armchair.
The ward was very spacious, there's a separate room for eating which has a tv so you can go and relax in there if you want to. It was clean and the staff would often come in and check how we were doing. The food was lovely and there was lots of variety to choose from.
The overall experience was fantastic. I would highly recommend to any expectant parent to have your baby there. If your pregnancy is a high risk so you are unable to give birth there, then I recommend you to go and stay there a night or two if you feel like you want extra support and they are all fantastic.
Cannot thank all the staff enough!
"Amazing experience! Would highly recommend."
