"Excellent staff, a few small things to improve"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital / Maternity care

we had a 12 week scan yesterday and found out my wife had miscarried at 8 weeks.

The staff were excellent - the right mix of warm but professional.

They obviously cared about what they were doing. A couple of if small things I could suggest to improve: 1. There didn't seem to be a seamless plan for moving people from finding out they'd miscarried to quickly getting sorted with the women's health unit. All we wanted to do was leave and we were waiting upstairs for some time.

2. Handing back our scan pic card and getting our money back was hard. It was handled really well but, as a small change that would make a big difference, if patients gave the nurse their scan card as soon as they go in for their scan, this would save them the trauma of handing it over later if its bad news.

3. Walking upstairs through the waiting area with other excited pregnant couples was also quite upsetting. I don't know the layout of the hospital but if there is another way upstairs without going through that area, that might save people a bit of heartache. Overall, a really good service but a few small changes would make it outstanding.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback at what must have been an incredibly sad time.

You make some really valid points here and have some sensible solutions that would make such a difference to couples who find themselves in similar circumstances.

I have shared your post with my colleagues in maternity to raise awareness of how you felt and how this could be improved.

With kind regards Sarah Turner-Saint head of communications
