"I felt there was no personal care or Interest"

About: Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I went into hospital after a bad fall, I was getting over a shoulder replacement and this wasn't noted. I also had a cold and had lost my voice as well as having rheumatoid arthritis.

The first day I was told I would get better care if I said please. In my opinion the sister insisted I didn't need help in washing. Morning rounds at the change over I heard no one say "Good morning" or "How are you" The only contact I had was to take blood pressure or give out of pills.

I didn't eat hardly anything for four days but no one seemed to noticed. One or two nurses were pleasent but usually especially at night one was made to feel a nuisance if asking for a bedpan.

In my view the very elderly person next to me was obviously in great pain and screamed when put on a bedpan but was told to be quite so as not to upset the other patients, I thought they needed some words of comfort.

All in all staying in hospital one felt very alone, The doctors were fine and the male nurses more friendly and less harassed.

Maybe some traing in psychology and patient relationship would help, I just hope I don't ever have to go back.

The second ward I went on had a much better atmosphere.
