"Lack of understanding of my condition"

About: Victoria Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I have been attending Victoria hospital for a few years now as I have a condition called PCOS and have been struggling to conceive. I have had to fight to have a laparoscopy as I was advised that because my BMI is 31 that basically I'm too fat to waste a procedure on. I wrote to the hospital to make a complaint about this, and only then did they arrange for the laparoscopy. I had an appointment in January this year and hoped that I could start clomid but was told that my BMI must be 30 and to stop using my condition as an excuse for not losing weight, something which I found extremely upsetting. I have to question the knowledge of the team I am dealing with, and the backward attitudes that I have had to encounter. I do not over eat I struggle everyday with my condition and how it makes me feel. I have spoken to my friend who lives in Edinburgh and the contrast in the attitude that she is receiving from her doctor is remarkable, her BMI is much higher than mine but her doctors appears to understand the condition and is supportive and understanding, she has been administered clomid and is hopeful that it will work. They are trying different diets something I have never had any support with, so it appears that we live in a postcode lottery, I understand the reason for not getting clomid is because BMI must be 30 or under for ivf but how unfair is it for someone who has a condition and isn't clinically obese through their own doing, to be refused something that other people get so naturally?

Dear Leakiz

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, I was sorry to hear of the difficulties you are having. I would be keen to suggest that you speak to a clinician about this and would be happy to arrange it for you. Would you consider calling me on 01592 648154? In the meantime I have passed your post on to the Service.

Thanks again for taking the time to post.

Regards

Louise
