"Concern about hygiene and infection"

About: York Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

There was no hand sanitiser at the ward entrance, two bottles either side empty.

My aunt, a patient of the ward has contracted MRSA whilst in hospital. She had been moved to a single room to contain the virus.

I was concerned that her oxygen/nasal cannula hadn't been reconnected after she had used the commode. Alerted nursing staff to this and despite informing them the cannula had been on the floor they proceeded to start reconnecting. I had to request they obtain a clean/fresh but if equipment as it had been on the floor.

Also the lid of the commode was laid on the bed and had to be replaced on top of the commode by me.

My aunt has a chronic leg ulcer on one leg and cellulitis on her other leg. These bed sheets would be in contact with her legs and I was concerned there was a lack of attention to hygiene in these matters.

I did not want to cause any trouble for the patient or affect her treatment by staff in any way but it has bothered me all evening.

She has pneumonia and is poorly and fully reliant on the care of the staff. We need get well again.

Dear MillyCar

I am very sorry to hear about your aunt's experience and thank you for taking the time to give us this feedback. Infection control is a top priority and the practices you describe need to be addressed as a priority. As an immediate action I will make the Elderly Care directorate aware of your feedback and to check that all sanitiser gel dispensers are refilled.

I can assure you that your aunt's care will not be affected in any way by telling us about your concerns. Would you consider contacting our PALS team with your aunt's name and the name of the ward where she is being cared for? We can then look into the specific concerns you have raised. You can contact PALS at pals@york.nhs.uk or 01904 726262.
